West African Drum Class

Wade Peterson is a noted drummer and teacher of West African drumming in the Bay Area. An enthusiastic drummer for nearly twenty years, he combines a strong grounding in Western music (he holds a degree in music from UC Santa Cruz) with a deep knowledge of West African musical traditions acquired directly from the master drummers of that region. With this blend, he has created a methodology that makes the music unusually accessible to western learners, while remaining true to the ancient traditions from which it comes.

Class activities include fundamental basics of rhythm, work with individuals on technique, soloing, and development of fully orchestrated traditional rhythms. Wade is an engaging and supportive teacher, and his love and passion for the music fills his classes with joy and fun.
